Halloween Read Alouds for Your Classroom

Halloween is just around the corner, and it’s the perfect time to work some fun read alouds into your lessons. Your students are already excited about the upcoming holiday, so you may as well use that to your advantage. Here are my favorite Halloween read alouds.

No matter what your reading block looks like, you should try to work in some read aloud time. Not only do your students love listening to books, but you can use them to reinforce the reading strategies you’ve been teaching. 

I use reading workshop in my classroom, and I tend to use picture books for my mini lessons. They are perfect for modeling the strategy we’re working on that week. 

I also have a separate read aloud time. During those 15 minutes, I read a chapter book, and we use it to practice all the reading strategies we’ve learned so far. My students and I look forward to that read aloud time each day.

Here are some of my favorite Halloween-themed picture books and chapter books. 

Halloween Picture Books

Let’s start with fiction picture books. These are perfect for practicing asking and answering questions, story elements, retelling stories, and sequencing. Choose a book that you enjoy and your enthusiasm will rub off on your students.

Fall Picture Books

I know that some school districts frown on doing Halloween activities, so there are also lots of fun fall picture books you can use for your lessons.

Nonfiction Books

If you’re in the middle of a nonfiction unit, you can still include a Halloween theme. Just choose nonfiction books about Halloween or fall topics.

Bats, spiders, and pumpkins are all perfect topics for this time of year, and your students will love learning facts about them.

Chapter Books

Halloween-themed chapter books are perfect for your whole class read aloud or for your students to read during independent reading time. I like to go to the library and check out a whole stack of chapter books for a special Halloween display. My students love choosing books from the seasonal display areas.
