In reply to TheIntrovertedOnlineTeacher. Yes! It is so easy to have a mini lesson that goes over 15 minutes. I've really tried to cut down on the amount I talk and make sure that my students get to turn and talk about the strategy we're practicing. Once I've made sure they can apply the lesson, I can send them off to read.

In reply to Jenn. You're so right, Jenn! Reading workshop really is student-centered. The students get to choose their just right books, and the mini lessons and strategy groups are completely based on their needs.

Mini lessons are such a great way to know quickly which students are understanding a concept and which ones need a little more time. Critical elements in a student-centered classroom, for sure!
